BAD BILL UPDATE
NJEA members mobilize, Senate pulls back on S-979
In a victory for NJEA members and their actions, the New Jersey Senate Budget and Appropriations Committee decided to hold S-979, a bill that would infringe on collective bargaining rights and limit health benefit choices for public employees.
As written, the bill would require married public employees to select coverage together under only one plan or program. In addition, it would completely eliminate compensation for waiving health benefits due to other coverage from public employment.
NJEA met with Senator Weinberg, the sponsor of this bill, on multiple occasions, and asked her to amend the bill to exclude employees under a collective bargaining agreement. However, she did not accept this suggestion, so NJEA and other public employee unions opposed the bill.
NJEA members came out in force over the weekend, sending more than 3,500 emails and calling the sponsor and members of the Budget and Appropriations Committee countless times. Our voice was heard; we could not be ignored. NJEA members and their activism deserve the credit for this important victory.
S-979 has been re-scheduled for consideration by the committee again on Monday, March 7. NJEA members are urged to continue to contact Senator Weinberg and the members of the Senate Budget and Appropriations Committee and ask them to OPPOSE S-979 because it interferes with collective bargaining.

What mature professional makes a comment about punching people in the face?
As Governor of the State of New Jersey he represents all of us and that includes the teachers’ union. Unfortunately we are used to this inappropriate and unnecessary behavior but as an educator I don’t appreciate him modeling this behavior for our youth. As a teacher I don’t tolerate behavior like this from my students or from my own children.
We have the strictest bullying laws in the country to protect our students yet Governor Christie is the biggest bully of all. My message to Governor Chris Christie is to “Use Your Words – Not Your Hands!”
My message to the country is to remember his words when voting for a Republican President Candidate. Do you want Chris Christie representing our great country in peace talks?
