Secretary: Karina Torres-Rivas
I am a teacher at Hawthorne High School in the World Language Department, where I have been teaching Spanish since September 2010. I am a 2007 graduate from William Paterson University with a Bachelor of Arts in Spanish, a minor in Latin American Studies and an Elementary Education k-5 certification. Initially I was the k-5 Spanish teacher in Hawthorne for the 2007/2008 and 2008/2009 school years and in the 2009/2010 I covered a first grade teacher position at Jefferson; in the same school year I acquired my k-12 Spanish certification.
My involvement with our union started in 2009 as part of the negotiations team and the recording secretary for the 2015 negotiations. I was a high school building rep for the 2014/2015 school year. I found, I wanted to be have a better understanding of our union and began attending the following NJEA leadership training seminars: Collective Bargaining Summit, Winter Leadership and Summer Leadership Conferences. The workshops I have taken are:
Using Data to Prepare for Bargaining
Legal Issues Affecting School Employees
Advanced Legal Issues Affecting School Employees

As your union secretary my responsibilities are mostly behind the scenes such as keeping minutes, maintaining official files, assisting the President with Association correspondence, notifying members of meetings, and keeping an accurate record of all members, just to name a few. I am very proud to be your HTA secretary.
The goals of this executive board are to keep you informed and to encourage you to truly get involved in the HTA through committees and events. There are many opportunities available. Please visit our website and NJEA.org regularly to keep yourself updated.
